USA Today has reported that Vanessa Marcil is returning to the role that made her a star, Brenda Barrett on ABC’s soap opera General Hospital. Marcil will begin airing on August 11.
Vanessa Marcil Returns as Brenda Barrett on General Hospital
Brenda was a very popular heroine during her tenure on General Hospital, appearing from 1992-1998. She returned to the show in 2002 for a six month stint, which resulted in Marcil winning the Daytime Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress.
Brenda’s most famous stories involved her relationships with Port Charles mob boss Sonny Corinthos and Australian corporate raider Jasper “Jax” Jacks. The love triangle proved to be extremely popular, and it is often cited as being one of the best ever in a daytime drama.
Brenda also had many strong friendships in Port Charles. She was a close confidante to Robin Scorpio. She also had strong connections to the Quartermaine family, even living with them for a time.
During her return to the show in 2002, Brenda resumed her relationship with Jax and the two again got engaged. After Jax misread the intention between a kiss between Brenda and Sonny, he left her at the altar. Heartbroken, Brenda left town.

Vanessa Marcil played a variety of roles during her time away from General Hospital. She was Nicolas Cage’s girlfriend in the Michael Bay film, The Rock. She appeared on Beverly Hills, 90210 as Gina Kincaid. She also starred in the popular NBC series Las Vegas as Sam Marquez. She has had recurring parts in a few series such as Lipstick Jungle and Without a Trace.
How Will Brenda Return?
ABC Soaps in Depth has reported that a casting call has been put out that appears to be for a body double for Marcil. It seems likely this person will share scenes with serial killer Franco, played by James Franco, who will be returning to General Hospital this summer to wreak more havoc on Jason’s life.
Jason and Brenda were married for a time, though never in love, and considering Franco has targeted people close to Jason before, it seems likely he will do so again through Brenda.
Brenda is supposed to be returning to town with a big secret. Some speculate she could have had a kid, likely Jax’s, while she was away from Port Charles. However, the secret is supposed to be one that she is unaware will affect everyone so much, so it seems unlikely a baby is involved, at least not one belonging to Jax or Sonny. Whatever it is, the secret is supposed to affect many of those close to her.
