In news sure to delight fans of the villainous EJ DiMera, NBC has announced that his portrayer, James Scott, has inked a new deal with Days of our Lives. The new deal means that EJ DiMera will stick around Salem for another year. Scott's contract with the show was set to expire in the first half of 2012.
Was There Doubt Scott Would Re-Sign?
EJ fans were put into a furor when Soap Opera Digest tweeted that Scott had decided not to renew his contract as he could not come to terms with the show. Frantic calls were placed to Days of our Lives production offices by his fans hoping to avoid this. Soap Opera Digest later tweeted that they were hearing the negotiations were still ongoing. Scott soon released a statement saying that the negotiations were going well, and he expected to be sticking around Salem for a while. NBC later confirmed his signing, and Ken Corday mentioned how important it was to the show in an issue of Soap Opera Digest, as Scott has a very large fanbase.
What Is Ahead for EJ DiMera?
EJ is currently running for mayor in Salem. His chief opponent is his brother-in-law, Abe Carver. His current romantic interest is Nicole Walker. The two share a complicated history, as EJ cheated on her with her sister earlier this year and was also partly responsible for the death of her mother. Nicole seems to have moved past this, however, and is now heading up the PR for his mayoral campaign. While she is proficient in her job, it seems as if EJ had another agenda in hiring her. Could the former lovers rekindle their sparks?
EJ will also face a complication soon when Quinn Hudson re-enters Salem. EJ sold his illegal drug business over to Quinn, and Quinn will be using that information to blackmail EJ.
EJ's relationship with his children has also been strained. He handed custody over to their mother, Sami Hernandez, after it was revealed that he had kidnapped her husband and replaced him with an impostor. EJ has expressed an interest in rehabilitating his image in his children's eyes. So far, Sami has been understandably hesitant, but she has allowed him some contact with the children.
While many viewers want EJ and Sami to reconnect, that does not seem to be in the show's plans anytime soon. Sami is involved in a popular pairing with Rafe Hernandez, and the duo are entering a quad storyline that has put Sami back in the orbit of her former obsession and current brother-in-law, Austin Reed.
